what in the world happened to bros?

And how concerned about the musical trio should we realistically be?

Periodically over the years I’ve wondered what happened to my favourite band in high school. In the four years between 1988 and 1991, Bros became the obsession of girls around the world who covered their walls with posters of the youthful trio wearing their signature Levi’s, brogues and bombers. They sold out enormous stadiums on their world-wide Push Tour and were generally living the pop-star dream. They seemed to have it all and then they seemed to fall off the face of the earth. I don’t recall consciously registering that the band stopped releasing music but I’ve recently assumed that the gloriously handsome twins Matt and Luke Goss and the marginally less handsome, brooding bassist, Craig Logan, became overweight alcoholic recluses who lost all their money. Alas, time is rarely kind, particularly to anyone who’s flown so close to the sun. So, it was with trepidation that I Googled their names this morning. And happily they’re all doing alright. Sighs of relief all round. Granted, there’s the manager who left them broke when he took most of the money left over from the three million records sold and the stress-related come-downs and fall-outs but now they’re all looking pretty great and each has found his dignified niche. It really could be worse. Here’s where they’re at:

Matt Goss
Matt was the lead singer lending his tuneful, boyish voice to hits such as the self-reflexive ‘When Will I Be Famous?’, the defiant ‘I Owe You Nothing’ (incidentally also the title of his brother’s biography) and the emotional ‘Cat Among the Pigeons’. He’s continued to release music here and there and has a millinery line no one’s ever heard of. Most notably though, he’s performed an elaborate show at Ceasar’s Palace in Las Vegas every weekend for the last four years, with big band versions of Bros hits and evidently still has ample time to spend at the gym.

Luke Goss
After considerable over-spending Luke, the drummer, sorted himself out forming a new group called Band of Thieves. He also took up acting and has appeared in a number of indie films, a bunch of TV shows and sequels including Blade II and Hellboy II. Luke, like his brother, is fit and tanned and his apartment definitely has better climate control than yours.

Craig Logan
The dark horse of the trio, tales abound of Craig’s early resistance to fame and the related bouts of illness. So, worldwide stardom wasn’t his thing but the universe had something different in store and he’s now one of the most influential figures in the music business. Did not see that coming. He’s made his fortune managing and writing songs for popular artists like Sade, Pink, Tina Turner and Paul McCartney and they benefit from his industry experience and reluctance to treat them unfairly as he was. He has a grand villa in France and offices on Sunset Boulevard and an awesome story to tell at parties about the time he sold out Wembley Stadium and saw Eric Clapton in the front row.
