After causing a splash at the 2014 VMAs when she invited a homeless man on stage to accept her Video of the Year honor, Miley Cyrus is again speaking out for the disadvantaged. This time, though, the 22-year-old singer went through more traditional channels, penning an open (and well-written, might we add) letter to New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo and state legislative leaders.

In the letter—a snap of which the pop smash posted on her Instagram account recently—Cyrus notes her support of Senator Brad Hoylman’s proposition to include $4.75 million in New York State’s budget designed to alleviate the state’s rapidly swelling homeless youth population. Cyrus notes that “between 2009-2012, the number of kids turned away from homeless youth shelters in New York grew from 570 to more than 5,000.”
The singer also spoke on behalf of her Happy Hippie Foundation, an organization she founded last year in order to rally young people around fighting injustice. “I started the Happy Hippie Foundation because I believe every young person should have the opportunity to find their inner power and potential—no matter their circumstances,” Cyrus wrote.
