Someone managed to break into Taylor Swift’s Twitter and Instagram yesterday, a mishap the singer has since referenced in cutely self-referential fashion. “Cause the hackers gonna hack, hack, hack, hack, hack…” she tweeted to her 51m followers after she regained control of her accounts.

Obviously Swift has now deleted the tweets posted by the hacker, which were pretty innocuous anyway, but the incident isn’t quite over yet. The keyboard warrior claiming to be responsible for the hack has now posted what looks like a screengrab of Swift’s DMs, and they paint a reassuring portrait of the biggest pop star in the world – basically, she’s a really nice girl.

In one series of DMs, Swift schedules a card game catch-up with Nick Jonas, the brother of her ex-boyfriend Joe. “Dinner/drinks/gambling? Are we bad kids now?” she asks, mocking her own butter-wouldn’t-melt reputation. In another, she sends a totally pleasant and well-mannered message to PewDiePie, a Swedish video game commentator with a big YouTube following. And in the final DM conversation, she exchanges dumb-funny whale puns with rising synth-pop star BØRNS. “Whale done,” he tells Swift, to which she responds: “You’re whalecome.”

So if her DMs are anything to go by, Taylor Swift is as playful, self-aware and super-polite as you’d want her to be. The hacking incident has also revealed her fierce streak. “PS any hackers saying they have ‘nudes’? Psssh you’d love that wouldn’t you! Have fun photoshopping cause you got NOTHING,” she tweeted yesterday. Perhaps she’s calling the hackers’ bluff, but it seems unlikely that someone as smart as Taylor Swift would send a naked selfie over DM – not when there are whale puns to be made, anyway.
