With Cosmopolitan‘s hard-hitting February issue cover commemorating Shafilea Ahmed, a 17-year-old British Pakistani teen who was suffocated with a plastic bag by her parents, after refusing an arranged marriage in 2003, and the Honour Based Violence Awareness Network estimating 5000 of these heinous crimes happening all over the world every year, with 12 of those coming out of the UK, it’s clear that honour killings are still a very real problem.
The debut feature directed by brothers Daniel and Matthew Wolfe, which was premiered at Cannes last year, follows a similar storyline. Laila, a young British Pakistani is on the run from her family, hiding out in West Yorkshire after falling in love with a white boy. Daniel and Matthew street-cast Sameena Jabeen Ahmed to play Laila, and she went on to win Best British Newcomer at the BFI London Film Festival and Most Promising Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards last year. Shown at the London Film Festival last October, Catch Me Daddy will hit the big screen on February 27th.
