Sexism and ceramics at the Italian Cultural Institute with the London-based artist.

Fighting female censorship and history’s suppression of women, Phoebe Collings-James’s latest exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute is a considered exploration of female empowerment. A series of ceramic sculptures that focus on the concept of orality, language and communication, Phoebe uses phallic shapes and punctured masses to challenge the patriarchal concept of penis envy and the Lacanian notion that a woman’s inferiority comes from her supposed castration. Conceived in the summer of 2014, during her Nuove//Residency, run by Geraldine Zodo, and curated by Harry Woodlock, Choke On Your Tongue will be the first time the works are exhibited in London. To celebrate today’s launch, Phoebe will be hosting a conversation with the legendary Sir Norman Rosenthal at the Institute, in association with ARTUNER, to discuss the relevancy of ceramics in the digital age.

Choke On Your Tongue will being showing at the Italian Cultural Institute from 19th January – 1st February 2015
