James Turrell lights up the NGA

The transcendental, monumental and often visually challenging works of American artist James Turrell will be coalescing in Canberra for a retrospective celebrating fifty years of his architectural crafting of light.

A master of the illusory effects of the medium, both natural and artificial, James Turrell is perhaps best known for his piece de resistance, Roden Crater – an extinct volcano on the outskirts of Arizona’s Painted Desert which Turrell has been meticulously sculpting for close to four decades – yet which remains unfinished.

The NGA exhibition will bring together sculptural, photographic and installation works from previous shows together with site-specific works for Canberra to invite audience to surrender to the celestial and swim in pools of pure colour.

From 13 December 2014.
