lfw: youth, beauty and love at simone rocha

Simone Rocha has often cited Catholic Ireland as part of her inspiration. The traditional Communion ceremony appeared in her spring/summer 14 show also she has used iconography as part of her show invites and branding. So it felt quite fitting that…

The collection itself was certainly worthy of such a sense of occasion. Simone is enjoying an astounding success that is rarely found at such an early stage in a young designer’s career. The pressure to maintain such a status must be an immense but Rocha seems unphased. Not content with merely maintaining her abilities she is pushing the boundaries and raised the bar yet again this season. Experimenting with floral pints and new textures paid off. Silhouettes and textures went verged on “weirdness” a deliberate move on the designer’s part only serving to take the collection further and evoke even more interest in each garment. It felt like a great privilege to witness such a show yesterday and an honour to witness the continued growth and success of this young designer.

The soundtrack and the venue had a church like feel was that on purpose?
It was about bringing people somewhere and feeling something and the ceremony of it. Less Catholic (she laughs). I really wanted to bring it somewhere else so this felt very personal and intimate.

The girls are a little bit sexier and in some places a little more elegant…
I wanted to make it provocative and I wanted to mix the elegance with something weird so that’s where the wiggle fabrics came in. I felt a little weird so I wanted to put that into the clothes.

What was the reference of The Flower Years?
The film In The Mood For Love, the Chinese film that was a really big inspiration for the show, before it was translated into English it was call the The Flower Years which was a metaphor for youth, beauty and love. So that’s kind of where all the floral idea came from.
