sweeter than candy, better than cake, kyary pamyu pamyu is the no. 1 j-pop star!

Add sugar and spice and all things nice to slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails… that’s what Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is made of. At just 21 years old, little Kyary is one of Japan’s biggest pop stars and equal parts shiny, happy kawaii and gross stuff…

With unbelievably wide, innocent eyes, a whole rainbow of wigs and a wardrobe to rival Lady Gaga’s, I have no doubt that she’s the cutest person in the whole entire world. Childhood dreams of working with sharks were put on hold when the Harajuku model teamed up with producer Yasutaka Nakata in 2011 and released a series of the catchiest songs you’ll ever hear. This scored her a massive following and almost 64 million views on the surreal video for PONPONPON. Watch as she jumps around a magical kingdom on a pogo stick, farting rainbows and dancing with a mystery pink figure with no face as candy, skulls and dragons fly around her adorable head. Kyary’s world is guaranteed to get you through the lowest of lows. Currently in London for the sold-out final show of her KPP Nanda Collection World Tour, she’s buzzing off a story she heard about Jack The Ripper and wants to know more. We share a few gruesome tales…

What were you like as a young child?
I was shy and always blushing.

And what did you want to grow up to be?
I really wanted to be a shark expert. I love sharks. I used to go to the library a lot and read books about them.

What’s the best thing about being 21?
The best thing is that I can drink alcohol! Now I can go to parties and have lots of fun with my friends… I’m shy, so when I have a drink I feel more confident.

What do you like to drink?
My favourites are plum wine and champagne. I usually get drunk really easily.

I heard that Draco Malfoy was your favourite guy in the whole world…
I still like him but I preferred him when he was younger.

Do you have a crush on anyone right now?
I have a girl crush on Katy Perry. I love and admire her.

Have you ever been in love for real?
Yes. Love is very difficult because it makes you feel happy but sometimes it’s hard.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?
Harajuku. It’s a very special place for me because it’s where Kyary Pamyu Pamyu was born.

    What’s your favourite karaoke song?
    Joy by Yuki.

    What do you dream about?
I have lots of nightmares. Usually I’m either on my own in a dark place and can’t find my way out or somebody’s chasing me.

What do you think that means?
I looked it up in a dream book and it’s supposed to be a premonition of something good happening.

What’s the cutest thing you’ve ever done?
In real life I’m not that cutesy so when I wear the really cute outfits it makes me feel cute and uplifts my soul!

And the meanest thing you’ve ever done?
It’s not really a serious mean thing but often I’ll tell my friends that I can’t join them and then I just turn up to surprise them.

    Who’s your favourite Miyazaki character?
I like Chihiro from Spirited Away because she’s very curious.

Out of everything you’ve ever worn, which costume do you like most?
The Beetlejuice-inspired outfit I wore for the Fashion Monster video. Lots of fans turn up to shows wearing that look.

    What’s your favourite emoji?
    (‘-‘) .oO (??)

    What’s your house like?
It’s decorated pink and purple with lots of cupcakes and Barbies and unicorns. I tried to make it like how I imagine girls’ bedrooms to be overseas.

What do you think the world will be like in 50 years time?
I think unbelievable things will happen. I think cars will fly and there’ll be no school!

If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
My favourite animal is a shark but if I could become any animal I’d like to be a bird so that I can be beautiful and fly around.
