Kavka Shishido looks like Emily the Strange. She’s got poker-straight hair down to her waist, a block fringe and always wears black. In fact, that’s why she changed her name… Kavka’s a drummer, born in Mexico, raised in Argentina and now living in the city of skyscrapers that is Tokyo. She’s a model, actress and IT-girl, but first and foremost a musician. What’s cooler than a girl who drums?

How did you first pick up a pair of drumsticks?
When I was 10, I was watching on a music TV program and found that a drummer had no exposure on the program even though he was playing with the band. I was impressed how restrained a drummer’s role is but I also realised that a drummer made roots of the music. I started playing the drums when I was 14.
What’s your career highlight so far?
When I had a session with the big names.
What would be your dream venue to play?
Budokan.
Why did you change your name from Yuuna to Kavka?
I always wear black clothes and that gives an impression of me like a crow. Kavka means Crow in Czech.
What’s the last song you played on your iPod?
Jai Adivasi, Oreka Tx.
Where is the best place to go to see interesting fashion on the street in Tokyo?
Aoyama where you find both unique fashion and high fashion condensed.
What’s the best thing about living in Tokyo?

Where is your favourite place to go in Tokyo that’s off the beaten track?
Café in my neighboring town.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Los Angeles.
