Jerry Hall is emblematic of the Studio 54 era. After being scouted on the French Riviera, the Texan-born model quickly became one of the 70’s foremost faces, fronting the covers of Vogue and Cosmopolitan, and walking for some of the decade’s most prestigious houses, from Yves Saint Laurent and Dior to Chanel. After meeting Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in 1977, Jerry also became an icon within the annals of music, too. Together, the couple embodied not only 70s heady nightlife, but the era’s louche, rock ‘n’ roll attitude. And Jerry (along with Mick’s!) style embodied the period’s decadence and glamour to a tee. Think sumptuous sequins, sexy catsuits, glitzy cocktail dresses and Halston-esque silk gowns. ‘Tis the season for party dressing — from lockdown or not. To fête the occasion, we take a look back at some of Jerry Hall’s most iconic outfits from the 70s and 80s.

Jerry Hall was born in Texas, but began her modelling career in France. After being scouted on a beach in Saint Tropez, the would-be supermodel moved to Paris, where she got her start in the fashion industry. Here, in one of her first shoots for Cosmopolitan, Jerry is photographed at the Parisian hotspot Café de Flore wearing a slinky cardigan dress and her signature blonde mane in massive curls.

Jerry continued to live in Paris throughout the mid-70s, sharing an apartment with fellow icons and ex-pats Grace Jones and Jessica Lange. During this time, the super racked up an impressive 40 magazine covers and walked the catwalks for Europe’s most prestigious fashion houses, including Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Chanel. Here, Jerry parties at one of the City of Light’s many nightclubs wearing that iconic lace catsuit.

Jerry had a thing for rockstars. From 1975 to 1977, the super dated Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry. Not even a year after meeting, Jerry famously fronted the cover of the band’s 1975 album, Siren, dressed as a mermaid. Following Roxy Music’s disbandment, the model made an appearance in the music video for Bryan’s “Let’s Stick Together” wearing this tiger-printed party dress.

Jerry and Mick Jagger were one of rock music’s most emblematic — and most enduring — couples. The duo met in 1976, while Jerry was still engaged to Bryan and Mick was married to model Bianca Jagger. They began dating one year later. And after more than a decade of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, the couple married in Bali. Here, they party at Studio 54, Mick wearing a suit, and Jerry wearing a sumptuous silk gown with matching fur-trimmed robe.

Jerry — and Mick — are both known for their extravagant approach to dress: sequins, catsuits, velvet and silk. Off the stages and the dance floors of Studio 54, however, the couple’s style was much more casual and, dare we say, conventional. Alongside Mick, Jerry dressed for airports and errands in preppy cardigans, tennis sneakers, jeans and ringer tees.

Jerry’s impressive supermodel wardrobe was never for lack of dazzling going-out gear: long Halston-esque gowns, party-ready cocktail dresses and of course, covetable catsuits. Here, perhaps in a throwback to her 1975 Siren cover, Jerry wears a mermaid-inspired minidress with faux-seashell bustier.

In 1980, Jerry branched out into the realm of acting with a supporting role in Travolta drama Urban Cowboy. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the model-cum-actress made guest turns on both the big and small screen, in films like Tim Burton’s Batman and television shows like Married… With Children. Jerry’s acting career even garnered her a coveted host spot on Saturday Night Live. Here, three years into her film career, the newly-minted actress dines at London’s iconic Langan’s Brasserie wearing an eye-catching gown that speaks to her reputation as one of the 70’s foremost it-girls.
