For seven years now, we’ve collaborated with the UK’s Music Video Awards to judge their ‘Best Wardrobe Styling in a Video’ category. Previous winners have included Mel Ottenberg for Rihanna’s “BBHMM” back in 2015, Marni Senofonte for Beyoncé’s “Formation” in 2016 and Congolese-Belgian musician Baloji for his self-styled (and self-directed) “Zombies” in 2019. Fancy being added to that list of incredible talent? It’s easy!
If you styled a music video that was completed between 1 August 2020 and 31 July 2021 (a labour of lockdown love, in many cases), you can put the project forward for consideration. The category is for music videos created for a single track, but those for multiple tracks under 15 minutes long may also qualify. The award is open to both stylists and costume designers, with the work judged on artistic merit, quality of execution and creative contribution of wardrobe styling to the final video.

After a remote ceremony for 2020, this years’ Music Video Awards will be held at London’s Roundhouse on 4 November, where the Best Wardrobe Styling winner will be announced alongside those of 37 other categories including Best Performance, Best Hair and Make-Up. There are also awards for everything from choreography to colour grading; animation to post-production; and 18 different directorial awards spanning different genres, locations and budgets.
There’s no limit to the number of music videos you can enter into the competition, or indeed the number of categories you enter your video into, though there is a fee of £75 for each submission. Absolutely worth it to follow in the footsteps of Riri and Bey’s stylists though, right?
The deadline for entries across all categories (tell all your music video-making friends!) is 3 August, so there’s plenty of time to decide which pandemic project you’re going to put forward. Good luck!
