Photography print sales were utilised by artists to great success last year. The proceeds of these impromptu fundraisers provided valuable financial support to social justice groups and Covid relief funds at a time of need and offered many an opportunity to purchase artwork that would otherwise have been priced prohibitively high.
Nan Goldin, whose prints often sell for hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds, was one such artist to utilise these sales and, as of this week, she is once again selling a signed limited-edition print from her archive. The money raised will support her campaign group PAIN, as well as Truth Pharm and RAPP (Release Aging People in Prison) for the upcoming year.
PAIN (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) was founded by Nan, with various artists, activists, and people living with addiction in 2018. The group have campaigned and protested galleries like MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Louvre, calling for them to reject funding from the Sackler Family, who manufacture the drug Oxycontin through their corporation Purdue Pharma LP. In March 2019, a number of UK art institutions such as the Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, publicly severed ties with the Sacklers, in part thanks to PAIN’s campaigning.
A 6×8 print of “Swan-like embrace, Paris, 2001” is available for $200 (roughly £150) plus the price of tax and shipping, and will be on sale for the next week.
