Selena Gomez is working on a Spanish language record

10 years ago, almost to the day, Selena Gomez tweeted something that got fans very excited. “Can’t wait for y’all to hear the Spanish record ;)” she teased. “It’s sounding so cool.” And well, that was the last we heard about it. Until now. Did she change her mind? Did somebody suggest her new music get shelved, deeming Revival and Rare safer bets? It’s unclear what exactly held the record up but you’ll be pleased to hear that it is no longer on ice! Perhaps Selena simply needed a pandemic project — you know, alongside her HBO cooking show — and decided that now was a better time than any. The as yet-unnamed romantic lead single “De Una Vez”, which means ‘at once’, was released early this morning alongside a dreamlike music video in which she has a glowing sacred heart outside of her chest.

“This has been something I’ve wanted to do for 10 years because I’m so proud of my heritage and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen,” Selena told Zane Lowe on his Apple Music show yesterday. “I feel like it’s perfect timing, just with all the division in the world… there’s something about Latin music that globally makes people feel things.” So, what does “De Una Vez” make you feel? Honestly, we can’t even articulate what that ASMR at the start of the video does to us. “This is the beginning of something I’ve wanted to explore for so long,” she said on Instagram, suggesting that the full record is indeed about to follow.

In other news, Ashnikko released her debut album DEMIDEVIL today, featuring your fave music witches, Princess Nokia, Kelis and Grimes, across 10 songs that are both sexy and disgusting. And because he knows just how much we’re all missing nightlife right now, Danny L Harle has shared “On A Mountain”, the first track from his forthcoming gabber album, Harlecore. Due for release on 26 February, the album doubles as an interactive virtual club experience complete with sets from mysterious guest artists DJ Ocean, DJ Mayhem and MC Boing, so we’ll see you down the front I guess? Head here for a taste of what’s to come.

Also in the i-D playlist this week is Ariana Grande’s “34+35” remix featuring Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion (if you thought the original was sexy enough you were sadly mistaken), Lana’s “Chemtrails Over The Country Club” and the Syd track from ZAYN’s third solo album Nobody Is Listening (dw Z, a few people are). Then there’s 88rising affiliate Lexie Liu’s “Alligator”, which is giving us big Dua Physical vibes; the dark, incantation-like “Believer” by Scandi duo Smerz; and “Are You On?” by very promising young London rapper KAM-BU. Press play.
