Martha Cooper is a legendary documentary photographer who’s been capturing graffiti and New York street culture since the 70s. For i-D’s very special 40th anniversary hardback edition, artist Futura — who designed the words across all of our anniversary covers — chose an image Martha took of his work on the side of a subway car in 1980.
“I have described MARTHA COOPER’s image of the [BREAKTRAIN] which was painted in 1980, as that, rare sighting of a JAGUAR moving thru the JUNGLE,” Futura says. “What an unbelievable capture, and obviously without such documentation, how could anyone have ever known of its existence. I am forever grateful [MARTY] for your friendship and honored to be among those whom you, kinda immortalized with those historic timestamps of our work. I always get nostalgic when I see images of the [BREAKTRAIN] as it still flashes me back to a time when we could only dream of our futures, while we were inadvertently attempting to write it.”
