Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki would like everyone to calm down a bit

The cinematic mind behind ‘Spirited Away’ had some sage words of advice this week.

When asked if he feared that Spirited Away’s position as the highest-grossing film in Japanese history might be usurped by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (a new animated movie based on a hugely popular manga series), Hayao Miyazaki was unfazed. The 79-year-old Studio Ghibli co-founder responded with a nonchalance that we could all stand to learn from as we navigate our way through the hyper-competitive, capitalist world we inhabit.

“I don’t think that has anything to do with me,” replied the retired filmmaker. “It’s better if people don’t concern themselves with things like box office records and concentrate on making their workplaces harmonious instead. It’s fine as long as you work hard on what you’re making.”

You heard the man! Numbers aren’t what we should be focusing on — the community around you and its wellbeing are far more worthy subjects of interest.

According to Yahoo Japan, Hayao was accosted by the reporter as he was taking a serene stroll through his neighbourhood to clear up some litter. “That sort of thing isn’t worth worrying about. There’s always inflation in the world. Right now, I have to pick up trash.”

You absolutely have to give it to the eco-conscious king: he’s got his priorities straight.
