Here’s something you didn’t have on your 2020 bucketlist: Following the release of her recent single and upcoming album Chemtrails over the Country Club, Lana Del Rey has shared a snippet of her contribution to an upcoming documentary on Liverpool Football Club: a cover of the team’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Usually associated with the chaotic mass chanting of football fans, the Grammy award winner brought her effortless and chilling vocals to the track, which began life as a show tune from the Rodgers and Hammerstein 1945 musical, Carousel. It later became a number one hit in 1963 for the Liverpudlian band Gerry and the Pacemakers, gaining traction with football fans and, more recently, being used as an ode to medical staff during the coronavirus pandemic.
Very little is known about the upcoming documentary Lana’s rendition will be featured in, and it seems Lana herself knows very little, coyly captioning the post: “for the new documentary on Liverpool” and tagging the team.
Though it might seem like a wild pairing, it turns out the American singer has actually been a Liverpool supporter for quite some time, admitting to watching matches and telling the team’s official website in 2013, "I was introduced to Liverpool FC by my manager, Ben, whose mood is dependent on the Liverpool results… The people in Liverpool are so friendly and the stadium's really impressive.”
