There is absolutely no denying the fact that men are complete trash. If they’re not ballsing up just about every political decision that’s been made in the past century or so, they’re being generally insufferable or — in the case of The Other Lamb, a brand new horror movie — leading cults of women into thinking they’re some sort of messiah.
Yep! In The Other Lamb, a monumentally messed up new psycho-horror from director Małgorzata Szumowska, a group of women have been raised in the rural confines of what feels like a Scandinavian forest under the rule of one man — played by Game of Thrones’ Michiel Huisman — called the Shepherd. It all feels very Midsommar-y: weird practises that nobody really addresses as weird; everyone wearing the kind of traditional, milkmaid-y garb. Then there’s one girl, the very excellent young star of The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Raffey Cassidy, who looks around her and thinks, ‘Yes, this is definitely not right’ — and thus, your new favourite cult horror is born.
Enrapturing, wild, and featuring Raffey in her most demanding and impressive role yet, The Other Lamb has spent a year wow-ing audiences at film festivals around the world, picking up plenty of word-of-mouth recommendations from horror fanatics. Finally, it gets its UK debut on the excellently curated movie streaming platform MUBI later this month.
Ahead of that almighty occasion, for which you should definitely make a calendar entry right now, you can get your first look at the chilly and atmospheric trailer for the film below. Expect sweeping landscapes, strangely obedient crowds of women, sinister happenings and, of course, a truly trash man at the helm of it all.
The Other Lamb is on MUBI from 16 October, and will be playing in select cinemas throughout October
