Dilone’s story originally appeared in up + rising, a celebration of extraordinary Black voices, and is the first chapter of i-D’s 40th anniversary issue (1980-2020).
i-D chronicled over 100 activists and artists, musicians and writers, photographers and creatives, in Atlanta, Baltimore, Minneapolis, LA, London, New York, Paris and Toronto.
“It is so important that we challenge ourselves to imagine and believe in a safe, free and loving world where all beings of all ethnicities, religions, genders, and sexual orientations can live amongst one another and be treated equally. I don’t believe the majority feels it is possible. How could they when the media replays traumatic events?
I don’t mean to pretend that everything is alright. Instead, fight for actionable change in hopes of this new vision for the world and for all of us. This is why creatives are so important. We have to keep hope alive when so many find it impossible to imagine that making a difference is possible.”
