RuPaul’s Drag Race is coming to the Netherlands

With the drag scene in Amsterdam booming, we can't wait for this one.

Drag Race UK, All Stars, Drag Race Canada, Drag Race Thailand, Celebrity Drag Race — RuPaul’s show has so many franchises that it honestly started to feel a little bit like fashion month at this point. It’s a global, glittery and over-the-top spectacle that has so many seasons, that follow each other so quickly, that you can hardly find the time to breath in between them. The show is undoubtedly one of the greatest things to grace our screens this century. But is this global expansion getting a tad too much? Are we getting viewing fatigue?

After giving it some thought, we have decided that actually we aren’t. Both the UK and Canada spin-offs have given us a gag-worthy glimpse into local drag culture — showing that the art of drag comes in many shapes and forms. With that in mind, we are excited to hear that World of Wonder — the production company behind the series — has announced another international spin-off, Drag Race Holland, which is expected to pit 10 queens from the Netherlands against each other for the franchise’s second European crown later this year.

Last year we reported that the drag scene in Amsterdam in fact is booming. With aesthetics ranging from demonic lizard lenses and facial piercings to fantasy-like pointed ears and couture à la Alexander McQueen — not to mention the new generation of non-binary and woman drag queens claiming their spot as well — the local drag culture is more diverse than ever. These queens experiment with their creativity and explore their identity free from the rules and conventions of drag, showing that it is evolving as an art and is more than just exaggerated femininity.

For that reason we are curious to see what the eight episode cycle has in store. All we know so far is that it will have a brand new host. In a teaser video RuPaul has announced that more info is coming soon.

The Dutch spinoff will be aired in the UK via the company’s streaming platform, WOW Presents Plus, and will be shown in the Netherlands on RTL’s Dutch platform, Videoland.
