How to make your own Harry Styles x JW Anderson cardigan

After Harry’s stans started recreating Harry's technicolour JW Anderson cardi on TikTok, the designer himself dropped the patterns for the original.

Harry Styles is a master of millennial fashion. The singer and actor, who last fed us with his 2019 record Fine Line, has become as much of a style icon as he is renowned in the music business. His stylist, Harry Lambert, has helped him transcend his 1D days of Jack Wills hoodies into full look custom Gucci and 70s rockstar suiting. Pieces he wears turn to coveted gold afterwards.

Harry’s stans are an eagle-eyed bunch, keen to emulate their idol when it comes to his clothing. Back in February, during an appearance on the Today show in the US, Harry wore a graphic t-shirt, pearl necklace and — most importantly — a patchwork technicolour knitted cardigan by JW Anderson. His fans loved it and wanted one of their own, but considering his fanbase skews young, most didn’t have the allowance to splash $1890 on a new piece of clothing.

So they got crafty, and started learning crochet (or utilising their parent’s crochet skills) to make their own. Some even documented their cardi-making adventures on TikTok.

The hashtag #harrystylescardigan alone has nearly 1 million views, but the most famous person to recreate it is the user @llilbittylivie. Her version has over 3.2 million views alone.

Having seen how Harry’s fanbase have transformed his design into a viral trend, Jonathan Anderson has decided to give back. Earlier today, he released the pattern for the original cardigan worn by Harry so fans could recreate it exactly: “I am so impressed and incredibly humbled by this trend and everyone knitting the cardigan,” he said in a statement on the JW Anderson website. “I really wanted to show our appreciation so we are sharing the pattern with everyone. Keep it up!”

Now, if you’re a newbie to the craft of fashion design this might be a little overwhelming, but at least you now have a guideline to study before you dive in. Plus, the original is hard to come by, so this here is your best chance to wear the same beautiful, bright cardi as King Harry himself.
