We don’t know about you, but for us the temptation to buy lots of shit off the internet while under lockdown has been sky high. With nothing to do but stare at our housemates and four walls and the hellscape that is Twitter, retail therapy seems the only answer. But if you’ve already exhausted the trash on Wish.com and now you’re looking for something more substantial to scratch that itch, perhaps we could interest you in bidding on a piece of Grimes’s soul? Because she’s auctioning it off.
In a new conceptual art piece the popstar is auctioning off “a fraction of her soul” to the highest bidder. The winner will receive a contract outlining ownership of the soul, as a satire on authenticity culture.
The stunt comes as part of Grimes’s first ever fine art show, which opened yesterday 28 May. Hosted at Gallery Platform LA and Maccarone LA, the show — fittingly entitled Selling Out —displays everything from notebook drawings to digital prints created by Grimes, some of them featuring her fantasy digital avatar, WarNymph.
In a very Facebook buy-and-sell twist to the whole proceedings, there is no guide price. It’s simply best offer. Sensible buyers only, NO time wasters please. So if you’re interested, why not buy a soul? The auction is open now and you can view the entire show virtually on Gallery Platform Los Angeles until 3 June, or Maccarone Los Angeles until 31 August.
