You’ve likely heard about her greatly acclaimed milkshake-making skills, but did you know that songwriter Kelis trained part-time as a saucier for four years, graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, and co-wrote a cookbook? No? Just the milkshakes?
Yesterday the artist announced that her new show Cooked with Cannabis will be coming to Netflix on, when else, 4/20 (ayy lmao etc). The season is set to run for six episodes: in each one, three professional chefs compete against themselves and the clock to put together a themed three-course meal, with weed as the key ingredient. The winner, other than being able to claim the title of “ultimate stoner”, will take home a tasty $10,000.
Kelis’ co-host, the Portland-based chef Leather Storrs, teased their show in a recent interview with Food & Wine: ” Cooked with Cannabis is a show where weed is a seasoning rather than the reason. It’s granular, educational, heartfelt and smart,” she continued. “The contestants had personal and romantic relationships with the herb and they knew its intricacies: medically, chemically, spiritually and as an intoxicant. Further, there was a real sense of community and camaraderie.” Wholesome!
Kelis herself expressed that the show possesses a great cultural importance: “In this country, there are so many things that have been used systematically to oppress groups of people,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “So this could be all fun and games, but you look at it and go, you know what, this is important. People’s lives have been affected in a really positive and negative way, and how do we take some control back?”
