Rick Owens’ current glam period continues apace – for AW20, the designer took the one legged silhouette inspired by Japanese designer Kansai Yamomoto that he established at his men’s show and took it to new heights. And what heights they were.
Models came out perched atop the towering platforms that have been a fixture for a few seasons (and also seen on the feet of none other than Marc Jacobs), newly fashioned with lucite heels. At the other extreme, they had huge frizzy wigs in red and blond stuck to the back of their heads, like a surreal wedding veil.
In between, Owens transformed the one-legged look into a series of dresses that hang down on one side, wrapping around the legs as the models walked through the fog pumped onto the runway. In charcoal and grey, they were statuesque in their simplicity.
In contrast to the sinuous gowns, the designer also sent out massive, down filled capes in black and blue — high fashion duvet dressing at its best. As Noah Carlos emerged through the fog safely cocooned in one of these giant creations, you thought that if anyone has a sartorial answer to our current spate of crises, it’s probably Rick Owens.
