In stark contrast to the intensity of recent singles My Name Is Dark and 4AEM, your favourite pregnant elf Grimes has hopped on the country bandwagon and picked up an acoustic guitar for the emo new single “Delete Forever”. Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music today, the artist explained that it was inspired by her personal experience of losing friends to the opioid epidemic. “I mean, it’s a pretty bummer song,” she admits. “I’ve had quite a few friends actually pass away. In particular, one friend when I was like 18 passed away from complications related to opioid addiction.”
Not only that, but Grimes actually wrote the song on the night that Lil Peep passed away: “It’s just like artists keep dying and stuff so, I wrote this song on the night Lil Peep died or whatever, ’cause I just got super, super triggered by that.”
She goes on to tell Zane that the finished product hasn’t actually evolved much since the demo version; that she kept trying to make it more country, more built-up, before going on a rampage and deleting stems left, right and centre resulting in something that she feels resembles… your Britpop faves Oasis. “This was definitely a situation where I took the song, made the song, and spent months trying to make the song… then right when we were mixing, right at the last minute, I literally went to the 800 files and just like delete, delete, delete, delete, delete. Just killing stems. I was trying to be more Patsy Cline or something, I was trying to be more country, but I feel like it ends up having this sort of like ‘Wonderwall’ kind of vibe. There’s a reason that song is so popular. That song does rule.”
