What are you all doing on 13 March? We reckon we’re gonna be manically refreshing our Netflix accounts, ready to dive into the latest film the platform has produced to satiate the world’s questionable, but undeniable true crime obsession.
Based on the non-fiction book, Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery — which itself was based on a story written in New York Magazine — the series follows a distressed mother named Mari Gilbert, as she pushes the police to find her missing daughter, Shannan. In the process of their investigation, they shed light on a Long Island serial killer, and the myriad of murders of sex workers they assume said serial killer is responsible for.
To this day, the case is still unsolved with the murderer believed to be behind the deaths of over 20 women whose bodies were found scattered on Ocean Parkway. However, yesterday saw new evidence in the case come to light, when photos of an initialed belt found at one of the crime scenes were released to the public.
The film, starring The Office’s Amy Ryan in what’s dubbed her ‘comeback role’, and directed by Oscar-nominee Liz Garbus, will premiere at Sundance on 28 January, before being released to Netflix. In the meantime, watch the first trailer for Lost Girls below and keep 13 March free in your calendar.
