By now, you probably know the story of Trayvon Martin. His unprovoked death at the hands of George Zimmerman, a member of the local Neighbourhood Watch — of which Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in court — sparked a global discussion on police brutality and spawned the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

A six-part docu-series produced by Jay-Z (working under his real name, Shawn Carter) will explore both the case itself, and the wider implications it’s had on “race, politics, power, money, and the criminal justice system,” according to a press release from February.

“The kid was profiled, pursued then shot in the heart”, a voiceover says in the new trailer for the series. “Trayvon became the face of our community — we had to go to war for him.”

Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is based on a book by Trayvon’s parents called Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin. It will feature interviews with family, home footage and photos. Released on 30 July via the Paramount Network, it’s set to be a gruelling and in-depth look into the case that shook the world.
