10 reasons we love lily-rose depp

Your guide to the new teen queen.

Lily-Rose Depp is the painfully cool new queen of everything. Despite being around for a sweet 16 years, the world only woke up to Lily-Rose when she stepped out looking like a pastel dream in Chanel at the brand’s Métiers d’Art show earlier this year. It’s been love, likes and lols ever since. And just when we thought she couldn’t get any more popular, Lily-Rose came out as being somewhere on the ever-colorful LGBTQ spectrum of gender and sexual fluidity in an Instagram photo-shoot. Here’s 10 things we love about the girl, because why not.

She’s got seriously good parents
While the rest of us have to deal with awkward dad jokes and over bearing mothers, Lily Rose gets to call noughties lovebirds Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp mom and dad respectively.

Her friends are on top
They say you’re only as cool as the company you keep. From i-D cover girl Willow Smith — who dreams of saving the planet and empowering women the world over —  to trans model and LGBTQ activist Hari Nef, Lily-Rose’s friends are anything but your average. They’re the young creatives of tomorrow and they’re all fighting for a fairer future.

She is an LBGTQ activist
Following the footsteps of Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne, Lily-Rose is the latest star to reject labeling when it comes defining her sexuality. Joining actresses Gaby Hoffman and new step mom Amber Heard, the 16-year-old has lent her face to a campaign called Self Evident Truths, in which artist and activist iO Tillett Wright hopes to take the portrait of 10,000 individuals who identify as being somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. Now coming out as being definitively non-heterosexual could be read as a bit of a meh statement. But when you consider the good that will come of someone like Lily-Rose — who is very much in the public eye — challenging gender binaries and highlighting the fluidity of one’s sexuality, it’s actually inspirational. Not only does it help to normalize what has previously been regarded as ‘other,’ it also encourages more and more people to stand up and speak out about LGBTQ issues.

She will open up Chanel to the next generation
First she rocked a pastel look at the Chanel Métiers d’Art, then she was a vision in black for the spring/summer 15 casino themed show, which she actually took part in. Now she’s been revealed as the exquisite face of Chanel’s upcoming eyewear collection, Pearl, shot by the one and only Kaiser Karl.

She experiments with style
If challenging societal norms when it comes to gender and sexuality wasn’t enough, Lily-Rose also challenges the mindless consumption of fashion. Expressing her individuality through what she wears as opposed to being a slave to the ever-churning cogs of fast fashion, she’s anything but normcore. In fact, her favorite accessories are huge hats like these:

She wore this to her 16th birthday party
Lily-Rose threw her very own ‘sour’ 16th where she dressed up in chains, held a sword and wore a string of onions around her neck.

She actually stands for something
Unlike the more spoiled celebrity offspring who probably wouldn’t stand for a pregnant woman on the bus, let alone fundamental human rights, Lily-Rose is politically engaged and rallying for social change, as per her Bernie Sanders Instagram posts:

She’s also got jokes
Whether she’s taking a picture of her dad’s dog — you know the one who Australian customs officials tried to put down for being illegally “smuggled”– with the caption “this dog isn’t welcome in Australia,” Lily-Rose has inherited her father’s comic delivery.

She killed it in Rejjie Snow’s music video
Appearing in Rejjie Snow’s video for All Around the World, Miss Lily-Rose sits in a car as chill as anything, wearing a headscarf and nodding along to the lyrics.

Which leads us to our final point: she might just be the greatest actress of tomorrow
With two movie roles already under her exceptionally stylish belt, including one opposite her dad in the new Kevin Smith film Yoga Hosers, it’s fair to expect big things from this one.
