In another life, Hedi Slimane could have been a record executive. The Saint Laurent creative director frequently uses the storied house as a showcase for his latest musical obsessions. In his three year tenure at Saint Laurent’s helm, Slimane has tapped Sky Ferreira, her boyfriend and DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith, Sunflower Bean‘s Julia Cumming and Nick Kivlen, The Garden twins Wyatt and Fletcher Shears, and Cherry Glazerr to name only a few. Here are five other acts we hope we’ll see on Saint Laurent’s roster.
Hinds: The scuzzy Spanish surf rock outfit is presently in the throes of a ripping North American tour, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the Madrid natives showed up on the Paris Fashion Week runway. The all-girl four piece has been steadily releasing a slew of strummy, sunsoaked singles all summer, and last month announced the release of their debut LP Leave Me Alone, due out in January. The crew is probably already on Hedi’s radar, having been named one of the most anticipated acts of Burger Records’ Burgerama 4 festival last March, where Slimane cast green haired SWMRS brothers Max and Cole Becker to front his spring/summer 16 Surf Sound campaign.
Tomorrow’s Tulips: Lately, Hedi’s been pulling double duty in campaigns, casting dynamic duos like the aforementioned SWMRS bros or The Garden twinners Wyatt and Fletcher Shears. One two-piece nomination for his next shoot: Ford Archbold and Alex Knost, the pair of Newport surfers behind garage rock outfit Tomorrow’s Tulips. The Kurt Cobabies (as they’ve been referred to elsewhere) have been recording as a duo since 2013, and this year released their third LP with a third member on glitchy violin — current Pixies bassist Paz Lenchantin.
Rachel Trachtenberg: Presently The Prettiots drummer, Trachtenberg was once bandmates with Hedi’s longtime muse Julia Cumming back in the days of Supercute! — their four-piece teen dream. Repped by Elite, Trachtenberg is making waves in modeling, too with a couple campaigns for Lanvin and Redken already under her belt.
Ho99o9: Although Hedi doesn’t really seem like a thrashcore fan, his runway rockstars often exhibit strong attitudes and rainbow shades of hair — traits LA-based demented duo Ho99o9 (pronounced “Horror”) have in spades. The pair’s hardcore roots result in a properly 70s style comprised largely of leather, tartan, zips, rips, and liberal doses of safety pins — fondnesses shared by Paris’ punk showman. And having been featured in our Tribes video series for Marc by Marc Jacobs, the pair are primed for a runway debut. Plus, a little more diversity in the Saint Laurent squad wouldn’t hurt.
Wax Witches: With a Burger Records discography jammed full of fast paced, snarly skate rat shredders, Aussie rocker Alex Wall (aka Wax Witches) seems a natural fit for Hedi’s catwalk crew. You can tune into Wall’s particular breed of snotty pop punk during his supporting slots for The Garden as he supports their Australian tour dates down under this fall.
