Landlord Blues Screening
Jacob Burckhardt’s film Landlord Blues was released in 1988 but its premise is still incredibly relevant today. The story — of a bicycle shop owner standing up to the landlord kicking him out — was one of the earlier statements against gentrification in a city filled with squatters and neighborhoods about to be made over. And anti-landlord angst is something New Yorkers are still dealing with in 2015. BAM will screen the rare, 16mm film tonight, and offer an even rarer opportunity: a Q&A with Burckhardt.

Cherry Glazerr
Clementine Creevy formed her band as a response to being a female in music, but don’t let that make you think Cherry Glazerr is all serious, all the time. Yes, Creevy warns potentially condescending males with lyrics like “don’t make us feel belittled, world,” but she also sings about grilled cheese sandwiches and pizza. The DIY-rock trio’s music packs attitude and indulges fun teenage themes in a way any fan of any age can get behind. Your chance to try to become best friends with them (we know you want to) comes this Wednesday at Baby’s All Right.

Girl Talk: Putting Movies to the Bechdel Test
Created by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, the Bechdel Test sees if two female characters in a work of fiction relate to each other over anything other than a man. It’s pretty scary how many movies actually flunk this test, and many women in entertainment are using it to call for better representation of women in film and TV shows. Comedians like Phoebe Robinson from Broad City and Emily Altman of Inside Amy Schumer will compare Annie Hall and Amelie, seeing how both perform in Bechdel’s test.

Swing-A-Ling: Reggae at Pioneer Works
Celebrating Charlie Ace’s Swing-A-Ling record truck that spread reggae around to the people of Kingston in the 1970s, Brooklyn indie label Names You Can Trust is teaming up with Red Hook arts space Pioneer Works to spread some of that same vintage, underground music to the people of Brooklyn. The day-long party, also named Swing-A-Ling, will feature Jamaican rock-steady sounds from the 1960s through the 1980s. At night, The Frightnrs will take the stage to close the event with live punk-tinged reggae.
