OSHUN, Jesse Boykins III and Lion Babe
Red Bull Sound Select finds and promotes up-and-coming artists in local music scenes, acting as the connection between you and your next favorite act. Every month, it presents a showcase of “next big things.” This month’s lineup is curated by AFROPUNK, so you know you’re getting the most exciting singers and bands on the circuit. You’ll discover OSHUN, the neo-soul/hip-hop duo of Niambi Sala and Thandiwe, as well as R&B singer/songwriter Jesse Boykins III and pop/soul/funk duo Lion Babe (aka Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman).
Tuesday, March 10 at 7PM, at Baby’s All Right, 146 Broadway, Brooklyn.
$13 Tattoos for Friday the 13th
What is Friday the 13th good for aside from superstitions? $13 tattoos, of course, which can only be considered bad luck if you’re a notoriously poor decision-maker. Luckily, many of the participating shops are home to solid artists, the kind you’d normally pay triple-digit prices to get inked by. You’ll probably stand in line for hours, but a little piece of art that lasts forever for the cost of lunch is so worth it. Some of the best shops joining in are Asylum Tattoos, Armageddon Tattoos, Black Square Tattoo, and NYHC Tattoo. Don’t forget to tip your artists, and well.
Friday, March 13, all day, various locations.

Under Construction — New Positions in American Photography
Foam Magazine devoted its entire 38th issue to the artists featured in the Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and Pioneer Works Center for Art and Innovation show. These ten young American and Canadian visionaries are reinventing photography with their unique approaches — yet, as show organizers explain, there are common threads among their techniques that make them the perfect group to present. First shown in Amsterdam, the exhibition opens in New York with remarks from Kathy Ryan, director of photography at The New York Times Magazine and music from Xander Ferreira and Justin Miller.
Friday, March 13 at 6:30PM, at Pioneer Works Center for Art and Innovation, 159 Pioneer Street, Brooklyn.

Lauryn Hill at The Cutting Room
We don’t get to see the iconic Lauryn Hill much, and when we do, she’s often late. But we’d wait all night for a dose of that soulful voice that many of us grew up with. Hill’s Cutting Room show is part of her mini tour, “Small Axe: Acoustic Performance Series.” Acoustic and in a small setting with limited space, the night guarantees an intimate experience. Given that “Small Axe” is a reference to the Bob Marley song, Hill will probably perform some of his reggae hits, as well as her new release, “Black Rage,” about the shooting of Michael Brown.
Saturday, March 14 8PM, at The Cutting Room, 44 East 32nd Street.
