Big year for gritty remakes, 2020. I mean, given that it’s the most horrific, depressing and undeniably ‘gritty’ year in recent memory, perhaps that makes sense. Following the news that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is set to return in a more serious update, everyone’s old Saturday morning Cartoon Network fave is following suit.
Leaving behind the whole sugar, spice and everything nice schtick, the Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot is set to follow in the steps of Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as it’s rebooted by The CW, home of sexy, kind-of-messed-up teen shows.
The update of the 1998 original, Variety reports, will fast forward into the future and see Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup as disillusioned twenty-somethings who are trying to navigate their way through life with superpowers. Fronted by writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, the show will also explore the unhappiness and resentment the trio feel having lost their childhood to being crime fighters. Dark, man.
