is ‘a star is born’ the greatest film ever?

This reviewer seems to think so.

A Star is Born, the Bradley Cooper remake of the 1976 Barbra Streisand classic, isn’t out until October, but already it’s attracting feverish coverage. And quite rightly, too — the original has become a camp classic thanks to its fabulous scenes of both music making and love making, as the ingenue Streisand falls for the more experienced rockstar Kris Kristofferson. It’s a paean to big hair, big songs, and even bigger bell bottoms, which is why they’ve cast none other than Lady Gaga alongside Cooper. Better than the film could ever be, however, is this review, accidentally published by Talkhouse before the embargo was lifted. It’s since been deleted, but evidently nothing is allowed to die when we have Twitter:

“It’s one of those rare movies that grabs you from the opening shot and then just gets better and better with every passing scene,” the review says, the sort of praise we haven’t seen, well, ever. “Every once in a while, though, I come across a movie that I’m sure will endure for as long as there are movies and people to watch them,” it continues, which makes it sound a bit like we’ll be watching Gaga belt it out until the poles melt and we all drown. Also, “within the first few minutes, you know you’re in the hands of a born filmmaker and can just sit back with the trust that your faith will be rewarded — which it is, many times over.”
