Following on from the updated Stan Smith and Superstar styles, the first hint of the rebirth of adidas’ iconic Gazelle shoe was when @bessnyc4 dropped a trademark, reworked image on Instagram, featuring everyone’s fave model, Kate Moss sporting a beautiful burgundy pair. The Gazelle was one of the most-loved shoes of the 90s, worn by Moss of course, but also a whole constellation of stars, not just from the fashion world, but football casuals, grungers and britpoppers too.
Even though it’s getting the relaunch treatment, the classic trainer never really went away on the streets of Europe. But to cement its comeback, and new image, stylist David Hellqvist has handpicked five young London creatives to front a new campaign, bringing the 90s classic into 2016. “The Gazelle trainer might be 50 years old but, by staying true to its minimal and timeless aesthetic, it has prevailed,” David explains. “It’s as relevant as in 1966.”
Fashion designer Charlotte Simone, musician Josh Caffe, the creatives directors of CMMN Sweden and menswear buyer for Harvey Nichols, Darren Skey, are faces set to take the Gazelle from the terraces and onto the front rows.
