As part of StyleLikeU’s What’s Underneath video project, Adwoa Aboah — model and founder of Gurls Talk — gradually removes her clothes whilst opening up about her addiction, difficulty with self-acceptance, and depression. The aim of the project is to show that style is not about the clothes you wear; it’s what’s underneath that counts.
In the video, Adwoa shared a huge deal about her struggles with drug addiction, which after a stint of time spent in rehab in Arizona, spiraled into attempted suicide, sending the 23-year-old model into a four-day coma. Aboah also spoke about how she has struggled with her image from a young age, saying, “I think if you don’t like being in your skin, it doesn’t matter how many times people say you’re beautiful.”
Despite her problematic past, Adwoa has begun to overcome her struggles, turning her difficulties into a positive project, Gurls Talk. The initiativeis about “opening up a space in schools where, we as women and girls can talk about whatever we want,” enabling girls to have a safe place to openly discuss their own issues.
