Where are we? Because it sounds suspiciously like we’ve just woken up in the middle of a forest on another planet entirely. There are bird calls we don’t recognise and animal cries too unusual for earth and it soon becomes apparent we’re deep in Björk’s really fucking beautiful Utopia. Things teeter out and fade almost seamlessly into US musician Kelly Lee Owens’ Spaces, taken from her new, improved, extended eponymous LP, which is out today. Had you heard of Duendita before? We hadn’t so we’re glad we stumbled upon her smokey prayer voice this week, same re. Moro’s silky smooth Jealous. Can We Have Fun (In This House Tonight)? asks east Londoner Azekel on the sonic equivalent to bailing on your evening plans and instead hibernating with the best human you know. He gets us. As well as collaborating with Massive Attack, rumour has it that Azekel once received praise from Prince, which is preetty preetty cool. East London producer and rapper Steel Banglez brought all his mates along for a nice track about how great his girl is for not being bothered about going to Hakkasan and the like, before newcomer Haich delivers experimental layers atop a playful bassline on Stone. Next up; U Never Call Me by Mura Masa and Jadu Heart floats along nicely, Swim by Dizzy gives us major Lorde vibes, and our personal highlight of uber talent Moses Sumney’s shiny new album Aromanticism is the twinkly Self-Help Tape. This week also features weird and wonderful names like the band Salad Boys, Dirty Nice, W. H Lung and many many more gems. Stay with us, follow us closely, and you’ll be rewarded by a freshly curated playlist each Friday morning.
