always better together

We meet a creative couple shooting loved up pairs, proving behind the lens and in front two's better than one.

It feels like everyone’s moving in pairs today. Last week, i-D met a tonne of creative duos making moves in dance, fashion and music. It all got us thinking, is the best way to move forward side-by-side?

Naturally with this in mind when we met Aleks Zaric and Yukali Robertson we were excited. The duo regularly collaborate and by the sounds of things, they’ve got their workflow on lock: Aleks stays behind the lens and Yukali styles, largely from her envy-enducing personal collection. They recently shot some of their favourite couples, and we were keen to get to know the pair behind these romantic images. We asked them questions about each other—but they weren’t allowed to peek at their partner’s answers. We think they did pretty well.

What do you do?
Aleks: I’m a photographer.
Yukali: I’m a designer, specialising in textiles and fabric development.

Where did you meet eachother?
Aleks: I actually hit up Yukali over social media!
Yukali: One night I went on a liking-spree on Alek’s Instagram. The next thing you know we were chatting via DM, and orginising a coffee date the day after. We clicked straight away and have been friends ever since.

What did you first bond over?
Aleks:Labels we loved, David Lynch, and the style of 90s teen slasher movies.
Yukali: Laura Palmer and The Pink Room.

What are your most impressive talents?
Aleks:Yukali is a girl of many talents. But I think what I admire most in her is her aura; she’s extremely approachable and so easy to discuss anything with.
Yukali: Aleks is a walking encyclopaedia of 80s pop culture! We will be picking at each other’s brains, bouncing ideas and he will blow up my phone with about a dozen YouTube links of scenes in films, outfit and beauty references all on the spot! He is so knowledgeable and is such a perfectionist. He is really special.

Who has the better Instagram?
Aleks: Obviously Yukali.
Yukali: Me, no doubt.

Do you guys have a song?
Aleks: I’d say probably the Twin Peaks theme song, we sent each other Snapchats of ourselves reenacting the “she’s dead, wrapped in plastic” scene over and over.
Yukali: Twin Peaks theme by Angelo Badalamenti.

Describe the perfect day together in Sydney.
Aleks: However cliche it is, I’d say a day at the beach is always the best. My favourites are Redleaf in Double Bay or Parsley Bay Reserve in Vaucluse.
Yukali: Eating Japanese at our favourite spot followed by a stroll through Darlinghurst, Messina in hand.
