The Smell of Us is Larry Clark’s first ever foreign language film. Taking place in Paris, it features a bunch of beautiful, self-destructive skaters hanging around outside Palais de Tokyo. Known for his penchant for youthful allure and sexually explicit scripting, The Smell of Us is set to be the new Kids. With appearances from 71-year-old Clark himself (as a homeless ex-rockstar and a man with a foot fetish), it also stars Michael Pitt lookalike Lukas Ionesco and has alluded rumours of a cameo from Pitt himself. 19-year-old model Angie Sherbourne has a smaller part to play in the film but with no less partying, weed-smoking or nakedness. We caught five minutes with the Parisian teen…
Where was The Smell of Us filmed?
Around Palais de Tokyo, and a huge flat in Montreuil with a half-pipe and a really nice loft. A lot of it was in the suburbs too.
What was the experience like?
It was like a summer camp, every day we were getting drunk and fucked up, and every day we were on a movie set. It was just fun, a bunch of kids chilling and skating and smoking weed, and afterwards partying… At first I was supposed to play a main character, but I was 17 and because I had a lot of sex scenes it was not possible. Now I’m 19 and I only have one sex scene.
What’s it like filming a sex scene with Larry Clark?
Well you’re drunk. Everyone was getting drunk before because there’s 15 people around you while you’re naked. It’s just awkward. You have to pretend to have sex and make weird noises, and my sex scene was really hardcore… Yeah, you just have to be self-confident really. We did it in one shot and it was ok.
