Annie Leibovitz is set to shoot a series of portraits of iconic women including tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams, comedian Amy Schumer, the first African American woman to become the principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland, and celebrity transgender icon Caitlyn Jenner, who Leibovitz photographed for her now legendary Vanity Fair cover.
Leibovitz has been commissioned by financial services firm UBS to shoot these new additions to her ongoing WOMEN project, which was first suggested to the photographer more than 15 years ago by her then-partner, the writer and activist Susan Sontag.
A single shot from the project has been released, of Leibovitz and her three daughters, as well as a behind the scenes film, showing Misty Copeland’s shoots, as well as a shot of Leibovitz explaining the project to Gloria Steinem.
The newly-commissioned portraits will be shown alongside earlier work from the project in a free exhibition that will open in London at Wapping Hydraulic Power Station in January 2016, before touring to Tokyo, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Istanbul, Frankfurt, New York and Zurich.
