The history of art school education and the state of today’s art schools are the subject of Art School, Smart School, a one hour documentary on BBC Radio 4 this weekend. Bowie muse and inventor of “ambient”, Brian Eno, relates his memories of Ipswich College of Art under the radical educationalist Roy Ascot in 1960s Britain, a time when art schools were independent and experimental places. Grayson Perry, sculptor Richard Wentworth and painter Eileen Cooper also tell their tales of education in art while Eno examines the current financial pressures of art colleges and their potentially damaging effects on creativity.
