Last week, we were stoked to see Chromat’s hi-tech sports bras rocked on the runway by curvy models, including knockout Denise Bidot. This week, size diversity remained on the catwalk thanks to model Ashley Graham. The size 16 stunner — who gave a TEDx talk about body positivity in the industry earlier this year — made her debut as a designer, presenting her collaboration with Addition Elle. Although Graham has been designing for the Canadian plus size brand since 2013, Tuesday’s show marked the first time her work hit the runway.
“I had a really hard time finding support and sexy combined,” Graham told PopSugar, noting that the lack of viable lingerie options for curvy women inspired her to create those pieces herself. “I really wanted something that I also wanted to wear.” Fittingly, Graham walked in the show in a pair of lacy briefs and halter neck bra and was joined by a catwalk crew of fellow proud plus models.
“All the girls looked amazing!!” an elated Graham captioned on Instagram. The show was live streamed on Periscope, and social media supporters cheered from the virtual frow with the hashtag #iamsizesexy. As NYFW draws to a close today, we hope international fashion weeks will follow Graham’s lead and spread body positive messages throughout all corners of the industry.
