Hip-hop’s hyper-talented creative force, Tyler, the Creator, celebrated the fifth anniversary of his annual Camp Flog Gnaw festival by supersizing it — staging a two-day carnival in Los Angeles. Throngs of skaters, punks, and charged-up youth blew off some much needed post-election steam at Exposition Park, where roller coaster rides and ice cream trucks flanked two massive stages and even larger mosh pits. In the past, Flog Gnaw has assembled enviable lineups of some of music’s most idiosyncratic artists; established and emerging talents who blend hip-hop, punk, electronic, and pop unite to ignite a radical party. This year — which featured performances by Chance The Rapper, Erykah Badu, Kali Uchis, and The Garden — was certainly no different.
Photographer Gunner Stahl has made his name shooting personal portraits of many of the artists who commanded the Flog Gnaw stage; fellow Atlanta residents Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Rae Sremmurd often appear in his hazy film photos. Here, Gunner exclusively shares a selection of behind the scenes snaps from Flog Gnaw, which star YG, Mac Miller, Kehlani, A$AP Rocky, Tyler himself, and many more. Have a peek, then set yourself a Google Alert for tickets because clearly, missing next year’s Flog Gnaw is not an option.
