Can you think of a better way to spend your screen time than taking in the latest brainchild of the producers behind the fabulously cursed teen dramas Riverdale and You? Yeah, no, didn’t think so.
Starring Euphoria’s findom queen Barbie Ferreira and Haley Lu Richardson (Cole Sprouse’s bae in Five Feet Apart), Unpregnant follows 17-year old Veronica (portrayed by Ms Haley Lu) as she faces an unplanned pregnancy that threatens her Ivy League dreams. She turns to her ex-best friend Bailey (played by a green-haired Ms Barbie) to drive her to the nearest suitable abortion clinic — 1000 miles away from Missouri, naturally — and, of course, hijinks ensue.
“So you’re hiding this from your man, your best friends, and your Jesus freak parents?” asks Bailey when Veronica shows up at her door. “And you thought: ‘Why not ask Bailey Butler to drive me hundreds of miles? She probably doesn’t have anything to do anyway.’” Veronica pauses, and then admits: “Kind of, yes.” Ah, true friendship.
The film’s director, Rachel Lee Goldenberg is a big fan of the dynamic between the two actresses: “Haley and Barbie are just magic together. And the response of people who have seen it so far has been incredible, and it feels timely. I’m thrilled to be getting that one out in the world.”
Unpregnant will start streaming on HBO Max on 10 September, but you can get a flavour for the action from the new trailer below.
