Despite the frequent reports of financial trouble and iOS chart-flopping, Jay-Z’s streaming service Tidal has raised an important conversation about artists’ rights and royalties. It’s also raised a huge amount of money for very important causes. A year after Jay-Z’s Tidal X concert, which generated $1.5 million for Black Lives Matter and other social justice groups, Jay and Beyoncé have announced a follow-up charity show featuring equally exciting musical talent. Tidal X: 1015 will take place at Barclays Center on October 15, featuring performances from Dev Hynes, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Lil Yachty, Alicia Keys, Common, and none other than Queen Bey herself. Angie Martinez has been tapped as host. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Robin Hood Foundation to end poverty in New York City by raising funds for the education of children.
“A strong education is one of the best poverty-fighting tools there is,” Robin Hood’s executive director David Saltzman said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that the proceeds from this once-in-a-lifetime benefit concert will support great teachers and strengthen schools. It will undoubtedly be an incredible night for everyone, especially our honored guests: the heroic teachers helping our most vulnerable children escape poverty.”
According to Rolling Stone, Tidal members and American Express card holders will be able to purchase tickets tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. EST, while the rest of us will have to wait until September 26. It’s pretty safe to assume the whole thing will also be streaming exclusively on Tidal, à la Dev’s recent Freetown Sound performance and Bey’s groundbreaking visual album Lemonade. The service has also just announced plans to stream Chance the Rapper’s blockbuster Magnificent Coloring Day Festival this weekend.
