BTS, the ridiculously popular K-Pop boy band, whose name in Korean literally means ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’, have announced a New York stadium show as part of their upcoming Love Yourself world tour. The October 6th concert at Citi Field stadium will cater for 40,000 fans, making it the largest US show played by any Korean artist. And, just to put it in perspective, this is in addition to their fourteen other American and Canadian shows which are already completely sold out.
While there’s no denying the growing popularity of K-Pop worldwide, BTS hold a special place in the genre’s recent history. In May, they — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM (formerly known as Rap Monster), Jimin, V and Jungkook— became the first K-Pop act to reach the top of the American music charts with their Love Yourself album selling 135,000 copies in its first week. They were the first K-Pop group to perform at the American Music Awards and were named one of TIME’s ’25 Most Influential People on the Internet’ thanks largely to their epic Twitter presence. And while no Australian dates are announced yet, fans remain hopeful.
