The 68th Cannes Film Festival will open on 13th May with La Tete haute, from French film director Emmanuelle Bercot. The film about a young boy’s difficult upbringing is not in competition but will be the first festival opener from a woman in 28 years.
Films vying for the Palme d’Or include titles from previous winners at the festival.
Gus Van Sant, who won the Palme d’Or for Elephant in 2003 will return with The Sea of Trees, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe as two men who meet accidentally in Japan’s ‘Suicide Forest’ where they have both gone to kill themselves.
Yorgos Lanthimos, who won the 2009 Un Certain Regard prize for Dogtooth, is back at Cannes with The Lobster, set in a dystopian future where single folk are rounded up and forced to mate within 45 days. It stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Lea Seydoux.
Far from Heaven director Todd Haynes will debut Carol, his adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel about a department store sales assistant who falls for an older woman, and which stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
The 17 films in competition also include new titles like Quebec director Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, a Mexican drug trade crime drama starring Emily Blunt and a new adaptation of Macbeth from Australian director Justin Kurzel, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.
Out of competition, the new Mad Max: Fury Road film starring Tom Hardy will be premiered as well as Woody Allen’s Irrational Man and Pixar’s Inside Out.
The festival runs 13-24 May.
