The latest offering from garage rock three-piece Cherry Glazerr is a snarling ode to female solidarity. “I was a lone wolf,” frontwoman Clementine Creevy wails in the first line of “I Told You I’d Be with the Guys,” then lamenting, “I thought I lost my pack / Where are my ladies? I guess that was my fault.” The meditative and menacing track is also a celebration. This week Cherry Glazerr made the move from beloved Cali imprint Burger Records to the bigger Secretly Canadian, and are gearing up for the release of a second album. Their first brilliant studio effort Haxel Princess arrived via Burger Records in 2014.
Creevy explained that she was inspired to write the new track when she realized a need to consciously strive for solidarity with other women in order to combat ingrained sexism — not just in society but also within herself. “Sexism is so ingrained in me, I can often feel that men are the only ones who can help me socially, economically. The most important thing in my life is that I’ve realized I need to work for solidarity. That song’s both hopeful and dismal!” she said in a press release. “Women work from behind their oppression. In order to make good art you need to be emotionally free and sadly, not a lot of women are able to do that. That always puts a fire under my ass.”
