Now that we’re done wondering when Frank Ocean would end our famine of tender but danceable R&B bangers, we can get onto new business — like, what’s up with Lorde’s next album? Three years after Heroine totally redefined what the universe expected from teenagers, the only new track we’ve heard from the New Zealand singer has been Flicker Beat off the Hunger Games soundtrack. Although, she did curate the whole thing so we’ll say that comfortably buys her some time.
While we personally understand a simmering genius, some of her fans are clearly getting impatient. In fact, one even straight out asked her on Instagram, “Do you think we will ever get another album or should we just give up on you as an artist?”
Turns out Lorde isn’t a fan of pressure, and she replied. Telling them to give up on her if they wanted, she went on to offer some insight into what actually goes into a record. “I’m an artist, I write a record when I have enough special stories to tell, and it’s all me, every melody every lyric, not some team who just start the machine up every eighteen months like clockwork.”
The surprisingly personal answer is a frank and enlightening taste of what it must feel like to have the whole world watching your every creative move. Remember, massive success aside, Lorde is still a teenager. Most of us couldn’t even read out-loud in class without choking up at 19, let alone cough up a shimmering sophomore album.
But there is good news for fans — other than the fact Lorde totally reads your comments — she concluded by saying the record is written and in production stages. So hopefully we’re on the home stretch now. Although for the record Lorde, no pressure from us.
