5 nominations, 23 years since his first one, and a million memes later, and now he’s finally done it. Big shout out to our boy Leo (if only he was our boy <3) who last night took home his first ever Oscar, for his performance in The Revenant. Kate Winslet cried and Leo’s climate change speech was the only speech not cut off by naff music. Being the loller that he is, later at the Governor’s Ball after party, he joked while getting his Oscar engraved, “Do you do this every year? I wouldn’t know.”
Elsewhere, newcomer Brie Larsen beat Hollywood heavyweights Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence as she took home the Best Actress Oscar for her brilliant performance in Room, while Alicia Vikander and Mark Rylance were honoured for their supporting work in both The Danish Girl and Bridge of Spies, respectively. Best Picture went to Spotlight while Best Director went to Alejandro González Iñárritu for The Revenant.
The star of the show, however, was presenter Chris Rock who cracked many an awkward joke about racism in Hollywood (“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”). It was also time to get patriotic when Brit Sam Smith took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for Spectre’s Writing On The Wall, Jenny Beaven won Best Costume Design for Mad Max: Fury Road and Amy, a touching tribute to the life of Amy Winehouse, won Best Documentary Feature.
