At a global press gathering in Boston yesterday, Converse launched a contemporary adaptation of their classic Chuck Taylor All Star. The Chuck II sees the brand working more closely with its parent company, Nike, by incorporating their advanced Lunarlon technology for extra comfort. “The Chuck Taylor All Star is one of the most legendary and iconic sneakers of all time,” said Jim Calhoun, Converse President and CEO. “The launch of Chuck II is a ground-breaking moment for Converse as we continue to move the brand forward through creativity and innovation.” The design team explained how they worked with bands on the road, artists in the studio and creatives on the street to come up with a new iteration of one of footwear’s most recognisable trainers.
Aside from the Lunarlon, the design team “doubled down on every single detail”, evolving the shoe with an extra padded, non-slip tongue, micro suede liner and a durable Tencel canvas exterior (which will come in black, white, red and blue in its first drop). Even though the new sneaker might not seem wildly different to the uninitiated, it’s a big deal for diehard fans and for Converse, who haven’t altered the All Star since it debuted in 1917. It fits perfectly with their “respect the past and move forward” ethos. The Chuck II will be rolled out this month.
