The young goths of Cruel World Festival

Photographer Miriam Marlene Waldner documents a new generation of California misfits watching their 80s icons perform in Pasadena.

Last weekend, California’s Brookside Park played host to an estimated 70,000 fans of goth, post-punk and alt-rock music for the second edition of Cruel World Festival. With headliners including Iggy Pop, the Human League, Gary Numan and Siouxsie — her first US show in 15 years — the crowd naturally skewed a little older. In amongst the OG goths, however, lurked an array of cool teens and twenty-somethings there to connect with the community, embrace “being a freak” and simply see their favourite bands perform live.

While some discovered the aesthetic through their love of the music, others were raised by goth moms or even ex-goth model grandparents. No matter the entry point, Cruel World brought with it a day of legendary artists and endless self-expression inspired by Elvira, Joan Jett, David Bowie and Vivienne Westwood.

A pre-festival announcement might’ve promised good weather and “100% chance of angst and despair” but a mood-appropriate thunder storm loomed overhead. Before it had a chance to interrupt proceedings, photographer Miriam Marlene Waldner met festival-goers and quized them on their playlists, their style icons and what being goth means to them.
